Red-light Runners, A Real Danger In Rhode Island

Red-light Runners

When a traffic signal turns green and you have the right of way, you should be able to proceed through an intersection without the risk of being seriously injured. However, that is not always the case.

In recent news, an accident at the intersection of Bellevue and Narragansett avenues in Newport, Rhode Island resulted in a vehicle rollover after a driver ran through a red light. Luckily, no injuries were reported, but some crash victims aren’t as fortunate.

What’s Causing The Increase In Red-Light Running?

Accidents caused by drivers who run red lights are a growing problem in Rhode Island and nationwide. This uptick has caught the attention of several safety advocacy groups, according to The Drive. In a combined effort, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the American Automobile Association (AAA), Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety, and the National Safety Council (NSC) are pushing for more red-light cameras to be installed nationwide.

The U.S. has seen a 17 percent rise in fatal traffic accidents caused by red-light runners between 2012 and 2016. In 2012, there were approximately 696 traffic fatalities – one of three years with deaths below 700 since 2000. That number rose to 811 in 2016, which had the most traffic fatalities since 2007 (914 deaths).

According to IIHS, this rise in fatal accidents is attributed to a 21 percent decrease in red light cameras, which dropped from 533 in 2012 to 421 in 2018.

Proving Negligence In An Accident Caused By A Red-Light Runner

According to IIHS, Rhode Island has ordinances that permit statewide use of red-light cameras. This technology is crucial for proving negligence in a crash. When drivers fail to obey traffic signals, it’s usually because they’re in a hurry, they’re driving drunk or drugged, or they’re distracted. When accidents occur, the crash victim is often broadsided – resulting in severe, and life-threatening, injuries.

However, not all intersections are equipped with red-light cameras. In this case, evidence from the crash scene can help you build a strong claim. After a crash, it’s important to take photos (if you’re able to do so), speak to witnesses, and obtain a detailed police report.

You should also seek immediate medical attention, even if your injuries seem minor enough to “walk off.” Failure to do so can hurt your chances of obtaining compensation for medical expenses and lost wages.
